As we embark on the new school year, I extend a warm welcome to all members of the Ipswich Grammar School community – a special welcome goes to our new staff, students, and their families, who are joining us for the first time.
The beginning of the school year is always a time of excitement and possibility, filled with the anticipation of new experiences and growth. We’re looking forward to the many opportunities 2025 will bring, both within and beyond the classroom, each event is a chance for our students to discover their strengths, try new things, and make meaningful connections. The year ahead is also an opportunity for us, as a community, to come together, support one another, and celebrate the many achievements - big and small - that will unfold over the coming months.
At the heart of our school is a set of core values that guide everything we do - Belonging, Resilience, and Honour. These values aren’t simply aspirations; they are embedded in the fabric of our school and shape how we approach each day, how we treat one another, and how we strive for success.
Belonging is about fostering a community where everyone feels welcomed, included, and valued. It’s seen in the way our students support one another. Whether it’s at GPS Sport, including someone new in their group, or even something as simple as wearing their uniform with pride. These actions, no matter how small, help create a strong sense of connection and shared purpose across our school.
Resilience is the strength to confront challenges with determination and to grow through setbacks. This year, our students will face moments that test their resolve - whether in the classroom, on the sports field, in a music ensemble, or in their personal development. These experiences are the building blocks of resilience, teaching valuable lessons about perseverance and adaptability. Resilience is not built alone; it is nurtured by the support of a connected community - students, parents, and staff - who uplift and encourage one another during difficult times.
Honour encompasses integrity, respect, and the pursuit of excellence. It is reflected in the everyday choices our students make: respecting their peers and teachers, showing up prepared for class, making responsible decisions online, and taking responsibility for their actions. Honour is the foundation of character, and it guides us in creating a school environment that is safe, inclusive, and reflective of the standards we have held dear for 162 years.
As we move forward into the new year, I encourage everyone in our school community to embrace these values - not only in the major events and achievements but also in the small, everyday moments. Whether it’s picking up a piece of rubbish, stepping out of your comfort zone to try something new, or simply offering a word of encouragement to someone in need, these actions build the kind of community we can all be proud of.
This year holds the promise of new opportunities and challenges, and it is through our shared commitment to our values that we will grow stronger as a community.
I wish you all a wonderful start to the 2025 school year!
